He was an all conference basketball player at Babbitt-Embarrass for Tim Malone (current Athletic Director at Stewartville).
His experiences as a coach and player play a role in his biggest coaching philosophy beliefs. He believes student-athletes should be focused on being a student first and an athlete second. He also believes being a well rounded multi-sport athlete makes a positive difference in any sport. His goal in coaching is to make a positive impact on each player with whom he comes into contact with and create an authentic connection. Coach Flug went to college in Fargo-Moorhead at North Dakota State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead; he obtained his Master of Education degree from St. Mary's (MN) University. Coach Flug says the reason he got into coaching and teaching was the impact Coach Malone as well as other coaches and teachers had on him. He says the biggest influence on his coaching philosophy is Coach Tim Malone, Coach Tyler Krebs, and Coach Shaka Smart.
